Cosplay Bliss in the Halls of Asgard

Posted on April 16, 2012 by TimeSiren Posted in Cosplay Leave a comment

Cosplayers are a wonderful breed of people. Adults, teens and kids who are not afraid to dress up as their favorites heroes/characters/icons and go out in public for all to see. Costuming is not new – people have been doing it for thousands of years and yet it still amazes me when they get stares from the “mundanes” around them (mundanes being those who neither costume nor understand why other people costume).

This past week, I had the privilege helping a costumer achieve her dream, even if only in giving encouragement through the creation stages of her outfit and crash space while she was out here from New York. I shook my head as she told me the sad tale of her significant other’s subtle yet poisonous attitude towards her efforts of creating her latest, greatest costume and of her desire to meet her idol, Tom Hiddleson, the wonderful actor behind the devious and handsome visage of Loki, God of Mischief in last year’s movie, Thor, and its follow up story, The Avengers, set to open in the U.S. May 4th.

The tale is doubly sad as her naysayer himself used to costume in days gone by, but now feels it is too much of an effort  for no payoff. I HATE when I hear tales of this sort and it is a lesson to all non-costumers to beware when you tread on the dreams of others. “Lady Loki” appeared on hollywood.com’s live feed of the Hollywood red carpet premiere of The Avengers as she was interviewed by Marvel themselves, so impressed were they with her costume. She also got to meet her idol, Tom, and give him a present of something he is well-known to treasure – a gift of music.

It can sometimes be too easy to give up on your dreams. You have to want something so bad it is a driving force to be able to manifest it when the odds are against you, but rest assured that when you do want something that badly, it will come to pass. Like many of us in science fiction/fantasy genre fandom, Lady Loki has a large support group in the Tom Hiddleson fan community, but they are more than just a bunch of fans. The emotional involvement and camaraderie of the cosplay community is not unlike an extended family – Gallifrey One and its Doctor Who community are the ones special to my husband and myself and have been for over 25 years. For Lady Loki, she has discovered this as she and they support each other in hard times as well as rejoice with each other’s personal victories, such as when one of them get to meet their mutually-admired actor in the flesh. At a premiere where there were thousands of Marvel fans lining the streets of Hollywood Blvd., the philosophy of following your bliss played out beautifully as a single actor met a single woman, reaping the rewards that will never be realized by those who do not believe in the power of dreams.

Lady Loki’s Marvel interview can be seen here at time code 1:16:15.
She can be reached via her Facebook page and Twitter handle of @Lady_of_Misrule.

Who Crack Video Track 2.0

Posted on February 16, 2012 by TimeSiren Posted in Creative Madness, Doctor Who, Doctor Who Videos, Five and Dime Fangirls, Gallifrey One, YouTube video pics Leave a comment

It’s DONE! Our second annual Who Crack Video Track of Doctor Who music videos, fanvids and general YouTube nonsense is ready for tomorrow’s world premiere at Gallifrey One! We will be in the Scottsdale Room at 12:30 p.m….and…

I am actually seriously thinking that since we will be the first panel in there, we will be getting there as early as we can and POSSIBLY airing something special before the panel starts.

Last year’s video track?

Videos that didn’t make it in but are still kick-ass?

Maybe. You’ll have to come and see. We will let you know what’s happening via Twitter, so stick close to your feed.

If anyone is wondering why the posts stopped abruptly December, it started with the annual upper respiratory crap that hits that month in a precise, regular rhythm that I cannot seem to kick. It was a bad one that lasted for two weeks and the cough for a month and a half. This of course, ruined my Christmas, birthday AND New Year’s Eve. Ah well.

Then things went downhill from there.

I’ll spare everyone the financial woes…they’re just too depressing to go into and are not unusual amongst everyone I talk to. We in the house are being quoted “Yana” by everyone Who Fan and non-Who Fan alike – You Are Not Alone.

Thank God for Gallifrey, LobbyCon of which starts today. Time to dive into four days of studiously ignorning the challenges that will hit us like the right cross of a Cyberman after the con.

I just hope I can duck the blows with grace and survive.

My Answer to who is right for Who – RTD vs. Steve Moffatt

Posted on December 14, 2011 by TimeSiren Posted in Doctor Who Leave a comment

Someone on Facebook started this conversation. I  generally don’t like these discussions as they tend to fracture fandom and start pissing contests, but if one person sees my point and speaks up that they too love something from both eras, it’ll make me a happy camper =D

They are/were both right. They both brought strengths to the show and have their weaknesses, but then every show runner will. I enjoyed RTD’s era for the angst and passion and brilliance he coaxed out of David Tennant’s performances and I love Moffatt for the fairy tale of Amelia Pond and the brilliance and poignancy of the Doctor with his Idris.

And TOGETHER they both brought us Blink and the tear-jerking reunion of his Doctor and Peter Davison’s in Time Crash, solidifying the link between Classic and New Who in the minds of many fans I have talked to – Davison even highlighted this bridging in his time on stage at Gallifrey this year.

I WILL NOT takes sides. This is a not pissing contest as to who’s Who is better. Finding joy and enjoyment in both eras means the fans win and that makes it so worth watching in the end.

Amy Pond Cosplay Gathering – Gallifrey 2012

Posted on October 15, 2011 by TimeSiren Posted in Cosplay, Creative Madness, Doctor Who, Gallifrey One Leave a comment

The peeps who brought you the Amy Pond Paradox at DragonCon are at it again! They are organizing another photoshoot for Gallifrey One 2012. Costume/outfit choices are going to be on a first-come, first-serve basis. They are also looking for a photographer since the one at DragonCon won’t be there for Gally. If anyone knows one who will be attending the convention that would like to do it, please contact me and I’ll put them in touch with you. It is tentatively set for Saturday but at this point the date has not yet been finalized. Stay tuned for more info as it comes in. (photo by Christa J. Newman)

Moffat Explains Series 7 Delay

Posted on October 11, 2011 by TimeSiren Posted in Doctor Who Leave a comment

From DoctorwhoTV:

“Steven Moffat has explained the reason why Series 7 of Doctor Who is moving to Autumn 2012.

“The truth behind the delay next year is: why are we killing ourselves and risking compromising the show, in order to go out in the middle of summer? I’m sick of it. I’m sick of standing in the blazing sunshine, with a barbecue fork in my hand, knowing that Doctor Who is coming on any minute….“Six o’clock on a sunny Saturday is the middle of the afternoon, whereas six o’clock on a winter or autumn Saturday is dark and exciting.””
